Today we went to Funchal again. There was a flower festival going on, one of the big\u00a0annual events on Madeira. Wherever you go there are artful flower arrangements on the streets and\u00a0pavements. We also saw the big flower parade that took place on the 18th.\u00a0Pictures later.<\/p>\n<p>Here is this year&#8217;s somewhat bizarre poster.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-197\" title=\"FlowerFestival\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thenook.se\/blogg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/FlowerFestival.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"468\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0There were arrangements en masse of this kind. Here we are consuming a simple but nourishing soup.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-213\" title=\"Soup\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thenook.se\/blogg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Soup.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"438\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We went to the great bustling market, Mercado dos Lavradores. Here the farmers come to sell their fruits and vegetables&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-202\" title=\"FunchalMarket01\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thenook.se\/blogg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/FunchalMarket01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"460\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&#8230;and the fishermen come to sell their fish.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-205\" title=\"FunchalMarket02\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thenook.se\/blogg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/FunchalMarket021.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The fish department is exciting for a guy like me who has only been fishing for perch and roach at\u00a0home in Sweden.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-206\" title=\"FunchalMarket03\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thenook.se\/blogg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/FunchalMarket03.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"468\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And here is the famous espada, the deep sea fish\u00a0that\u00a0is\u00a0a standard dish in every restaurant on the whole of Madeira. It is monstrous but very tasty, mostly served with grilled banana, potatoes and a mountain of vegetables. It lives at 2000 meters depth in the ocean. The big eyes are useful for animals who live in such a dark place. Here\u00a0they lie on\u00a0their bed of ice with broken eyes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-207\" title=\"FunchalMarket04\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thenook.se\/blogg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/FunchalMarket04.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"396\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Funchal had had terrible floods earlier,\u00a0where heavy rain\u00a0gathered in the two river beds until they couldn&#8217;t hold any more water. Street were destroyed, housed washed away and people died. There were still water in the river on our visit, but only in a moderate quantity. A great deal of damage was already repaired.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-208\" title=\"River1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thenook.se\/blogg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/River1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here you can se how the mud from the river has made the harbour water brown.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-209\" title=\"Harbour\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thenook.se\/blogg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Harbour.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We drove up to Monte in the afternoon. Monte is a popular tourist place since this is from where the famous sleigh rides start (traditional wooden sleighs going down the steep hills all the way to the center of Funchal). Some nice levada walks starts here too. On this picture you can see that the whole mountain side had slid down into the valley. The house owners had a narrow escape. To the bottom left you can see the cable cabin that will take you all the way from the harbour in Funchal up to Monte. A truly spectacular ride.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-210\" title=\"Landslide\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thenook.se\/blogg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Landslide.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I have a peculiar relationship to doors. I always feel\u00a0compelled to take photos of interesting doors. A psychologist probably would have interesting things to say about it.\u00a0Here is a door I found in the Santa Catarina park.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-215\" title=\"Door\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thenook.se\/blogg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Door.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And here are some Madeiran souvenires.
